Default Crappy PS pump..temp fix?

Okay well for starters, its January, I work in Retail and its slowing down, the slower it gets the less $$$ i make..soo i need a realativly cheap fix here. My ps pump is crappy..atleast i think its the pump. It grumbles around most corers ESPECIALLY in the cold weather..tonight i went to move it from down the street into my driveway, i started it up, it was cold, i gave it a few mins then i put it in gear started to go ahead and turned the wheel..it felt just like manual steering! My guess is Weak pump+thick cold fluid=Hard turning...is there a special fluid or additive i can put in there maybe a thinner synthetic fluid??? The pump is about 135 bucks at Canadian tire so in a month or so im gunna buy one and do it myself now that i have a Chiltons to help me out.

Those power steering pumps on the supercharged engine are tough to work on. You can start by changing the old fluid out. It made a significant difference on mine.

Yeah, if it is dark. Look at new power steering fluid.

That sure was a pain in the ***, though. It'* too hard to reach the power steering line up through the wheel well. You really need one of those socket drivers on a spring.

If I had to do it again, I might have the dealer or a shop do it.

I'd say try new fluid now if possible. Maybe a thinner fluid for cold winter? It could have gotten water in it, or something that will much up when cold.

There are two lines on the pump, the reservoir is remote to the pump with one fat line connected to it. Most of the fluid is in the pump, that'* where I detached the return line.

Couldn't you just find a piece of tubing that you could shove into the reservior pressure line from the cap opening? Run it to a bucket, the stand there with new fluid? I'd need to peek at mine to see if this is possible, but it may be something to consider. You wouldn't have to disconnect anything but the cap that way.

There'* quite a bit of fluid in the rack, too. You could probably get a portion of the fluid out thru the cap.
