egr pintle position error??!!

egr pintle position error??!! ses light came on today for a brief second. scanned and checked the history codes, this is all that came up? so i cleared the code and am gonna wait and see if it comes back...

what does this exactly mean?

The EGR (Exhaust Gas Recirculation) valve in the car is electronically actuated (as opposed to vacuum on most cars). The PCM is going to send a signal to the EGR valve to open when certain conditions are met (i.e. on the highway, warm engine). The valve is fitted with a position idicator that is going to check the position to give the feedback (error signal in a feedback system) to the PCM to ensure that it has achieved the proper position that was demanded. If it does not achieve this position then this code is set. Now, there could be two problems here...The servo motor that acuates the pintle didn't work or the feedback. Without a diagnostic scanner to step the servo open (incriments of 10 percent), it is dificult to diagnose, if not impossible. My recommendation is to let it go for a bit and see if it keeps coming on. If it does, pull off the EGR valve and give it a cleaning with intake cleaner and reinstall. Still doing it and the SES light bugs you? Get it checked by a scanner. Hope this answers your question.

I had the same problem with my car along with my P0341 code. I replaced the egr valve and the code went away.

the light was only on for about 5 mintues. got home started the car again and nothing. hooked up the scanner and thats what i got. no problems since yesterday...all seems fine

if nothing else we have a couple old 3800s that i could pull the egr off

The digital EGR used from 91-93 does this on one of the solonoids occasionally. Because the shafts are exposed, they can be cleaned and lightly lubed to prevent it. A few of us have had that happen in the past with those.

Yours is linear, but cheaper, thank god.

so r u saying replace the egr?? even if the code doesn't come back?

Clean it, even if it doesn't come back...

I've got the same problem.. I've been running the car for 6 or so months now with the CEL coming on because of that code. It doesnt come on until I'm either on coast down or braking conditions. But typically every time I turn on the car to drive it, at some point during that trip the light will come on. I'm still waiting to find a used one the auto yard or on ebay.

The Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) system is one of the engine's primary emission controls. Its purpose is to reduce oxides of nitrogen (NOX) pollution in the exhaust. It does this by "leaking" (recirculating) small amounts of exhaust into the intake manifold through the EGR valve. Though the gases are hot, they actually have a cooling effect on combustion temperatures by diluting the air/fuel mixture slightly. Lowering the combustion temperature reduces the formation of NOX as well as the octane requirements of the engine.
If the EGR valve is not opening, either because the valve itself is defective or because its vacuum supply is blocked (loose, plugged or misrouted vacuum hose connections, or a defective vacuum control valve or solenoid), the cooling effect is lost. The result will be higher combustion temperatures under load and an increased chance of detonation.

Better hop on that replacement :D

And burnt valves......like the Non-SC 92's.
