I have a 93 SE with 300,000 miles. The last few months I have not been able to get gas to go in the tank. When I try to refuel it the pump keeps clicking off like its already full. I put in 2 or 3 tenths of a gallon then it clicks off, I wait a few seconds then try again and the same thing happens, 2 or 3 tenths of a gallon and it clicks off. It takes as long as 15 minutes to fill it up. I was listening to Click and Clack the other day, and they had a caller who was having similar problems. They said that it could be a valve in the vapor recovery system causing the problem. So, I got an idea maybe the valve works fine when the engine is running because it runs like a top with no other symptoms. Sure enough I can fill it right up with the engine running. The question is does anyone know where this valve is located in a Bonneville, and how I could test it?

Sounds like you may need the Vapor Canister Purge Valve.
Location is up front engine bay under the air cleaner box.

Have you had the car scanned for codes? engine light on?

just pull the nozzle out more... happens to me occasionally

Another thought would be, every gas tank has a vent tube, so when you fill the tank, air can escape, while the fuel is being pumped into the tank. Some vent tubes are metal, some rubber. Yours might be either collapsed or plugged up.

I'd think it was a vent tube or pump nozzle location issue. I've turned the nozzle the wrong way before and when it fills the vent tube...that doesn't work well

I have tried every noozle position I can think of, in, out a little, out a lot, to the right, to the left, upside down. It doesn't matter, it still will only take a small amount of gas before it kicks out. The vent tube does not appear to be clogged or kinked. I have pushed a piece of wire down the filler tube and there does not appear to be any obstructions. I will look at the purge valve next. Thanks for all your input!
