Default BRAKE! Dash Light On. Car does not turn over. Please assist.

Car : 1997 Bonneville SE

So I was driving my car to a store, on the way it ran fine -- I parked it in the lot and went into the store for around an hour.
It'* pouring out, most rain I've seen in a long time. So I leave the store and try to start my car.

Check Engine light is on.
BRAKE( ! ) light is on.
My dash and headlights all turn on.
But the car does not turn over.
I checked my parking brake and it wasn't activated.

I couldn't stay long because of the rain so I left the car in the lot and was picked up.
I'll go back in the morning but I though I'd toss this up for some insight to what the problem might be.

Thanks.
Any information or idea as to what this is would be greatly appreciated.

Unrelated problems.

Check your brake fluid in the master cylinder. If it'* low, top it off. Look for leaks, particularly down the firewall from the master cylinder. Don't drive the car until you find out why you have that light.

For the not turning over, I assume it won't even crank? Disconnect both battery cables and pull the boots off (you must pull them off). You'll likely find corrosion hiding under the boots. Clean it, apply dielectric grease, and put them back. We get about a dozen of these a month.

If that fails..watch your security light..when you are sitting there it should be blinking. Upon starting it becomes solid for 5 seconds and turns off. That is proper operation.

This might be the starter as well. Bring a hammer and a friend..start with the battery cables..

I agree with Will - the brake light is most likely an unrelated problem, and the first thing to do is to check the fluid level.
If the engine didn't turn over, check the battery and battery cables. Something like that once happened to me with an old Chevy.

Thanks for the info and sorry for the new post, but I searched up the forum for similar problems and couldn't find anything pertaining to both of my problems, probably because they were unrelated.

Thanks again though.

On the brake light.. most car illuminate the brake light during start up. I haven't paid attention..but I'd think it'* normal.
