'94 Bonneville SSE with electronic climate control 136,000 miles.


I just had my airmix actuator replaced with a new one because I wasn't able to control my temperature. The electric motor was just wore out and wasn't able to open and close the airmix door anymore so was always hot or cold and had to manually adjust.

But today - after new airmix has been replaced - I'm hearing a funning CREAKING NOISE when I adjust my temperature up or down. I can hear a HVAC door opening and closing that coincides with the creaking noise. By my ear it sounds high up in the center of the dash somewhere. I called local GM parts and was told there are actually 2 temperature control valves in my HVAC. Now, I'm concerned that I will have to shell out some more money to replace this 2nd actuator - if that is indeed where the noise is coming from.

I do know that there was a wire harness in close proximity to the airmix actuator that was replaced and I specifically told the mechanic to make sure it was put up out of the way so as to not bind up the actuator again.

Any ideas on what this might be?

You only have one airmix door for temperature.

The other door is used to specify which vents the air comes out.

Does it make noise when you switch between floor or dash vents? Or defrost?

Yes, it does make the noise when switching from defrost, vent, floor.
When changing the temperature I did not notice this before.

I'm assuming this is nasty, if I have to replace myself.
I'm also assuming this would be expensive to have a shop replace.

Did you know the door pivot points are plastic on plastic?

It seems to be working ok, just makes a creaking noise when temperatures are colder.

I did not know that they were plastic on plastic pivots.

Is this a time intensive repair if actuator that controls this door needs to be fixed?

Honestly, I dont think this is anything that needs to be fixed. Ive had squeaks/creaks on both cars when adjusting the vents and temperature. The climate control systems on both cars work fine.

If you want to tear into it, it'll be a major disassembly project. The entire dash. You MIGHT be able to get in there from underneath or through the glovebox to lube the pivots.

I'd suggest removing the glovebox door and inner liner, and poking around in there while you adjust the temp and vent locations, and see what you can see with a flashlight.

Use some kind of spray lube on what you can get to that doesn't stink.

I'll leave it alone and just let it make the creaking noise for now and if that fails then I will take Willrens adivce.
