Default Gas in oil.

I bought my car recently, and after I got it home I noticed the oil was over-full and smelled like fuel. I was taking it to get the oil changed anyway, cuz for used cars unless the oil is obviously brand new that'* what I do, and the mechanic said that most likely the oil smelled like gas because it was over-filled. The car seems to be running great now, but I checked last evening and I'm still getting a gas smell from the oil filler cap. Is this just the smell taking some time to dissipate?

There will always be a small amount of gas smell in the oil, but should not be over powering. If it smells about the same as prior to changing the oil, It'* possible that what you are smelling is the residual aromatics. If it'* getting worse over time, pull and inspect your plugs and then you should do a compression test on your cylinders.

Don't want to scare you but, I have a friend who had a Ford that had a bad fuel injector. The fuel injector allowed fuel to flow into the engine when it was shut off. One time the fuel ran into the cylinder to the point that the cylinder was full of gas. When he went to start it one cold morning the starter motor tried to push the piston up but, it wouldn't go up because the cylinder was full of gas, causing the connecting rod to bend. Not good! I have never noticed a gasoline smell on the dipstick of any of the cars I have owned. If I smelled gas on my dipstick I'd be looking for the problem.

First off I've never heard of overfilling the oil to cause it to smell like gas??? And if the oil is overfilling after an oil change properly topped of, a leaky injector is a definite suspicion to check out.

Got me, that'* just what the dude said. What would be a good way to check injectors?
