Cranks but won't start

When it's below freezing out, my car will crank but won't start.
If I tap the gas a little, it will start.
And when it's warm it starts right up.
I've tried switching IAC valves, cleaning the passage, and I even switched back to my original 95 L36 TB with the same results.
Any other ideas?

have u checked the Fuel Press?

BillBoost37 Dec 21, 2005 11:34 AM

Knowing you've done a good amount of work to the motor. Has the TPS ever been off? I know there is the possiblitly to put one on almost right. Pure guess though.

I haven't checked the fuel pressure lately. I'll have to remember to do that when I get home.
The TPS hasn't been taken off the TB I just put on so that should be good.
Keep em comming guys.
PCV valve?

I have an idea for you. Let's find out if it's too rich or too lean. If you have your MAF screen installed, put duct tape on it to cover about 1/3 of the surface area and see if that helps you start.

If so, you may have a lean start condition to track down. The Zilla has a mild case of this due to all the porting I did. If I cover part of the screen, she starts right up on a cold morning.

thats just pressure in the crankcase if it isnt working right? that wouldnt cause it not to fire right? First I would check the fuel filter.

Yeah I guess not on the pcv.
Bill, I don't have the screen installed. If I tried to richen it up via afc, that should work too right?
On a side note, My IAC valve is 500% louder on my 95 TB.

The AFC would only help if you were ACTUALLY getting fuel. That's why I suggest restricting air first. Get that screen in and try it.

If it works after you restrict the intake on start, your possible suspects are:

IAC (open too full or stuck open) or associated wiring if both do the same
Vacuum leak <-------- biggie here
FPR/Fuel pump/Filter

There are others, but not as likely.

Bill, I know you said try the duct tape and screen thing first but it will take a while before I have time to test that out. I mean this weekend I can wake up and try it but during the week I go to work in the morning.
Soo, When I was leaving work I figured I'd just try it out. The car started no problem. I'm taking this with a grain of salt though since it's an intermittent problem.
But I looked at my fuel trims and they were way lean.. I adjusted the afc accordingly.
Tomorrow morning I guess I'll see if that fixed the problem.

My car started no problem today. :flashbounce:
Needless to say I was grinning ear to ear the whole way to work.
So, now my lt fuel trims are tamed back to 128-9ish, I have my evap canister hooked up with my old TB, and I don't practically have to flood the engine to start it.
I can't wait to see what this does to my gas mileage.
Not to mention my trans has given me zero trouble in the past 3 weeks. (Haven't floored it in months. )
This is great. 8)

Edit - Thanks guys!
