Climate control flashing and air from windshield vents only
 

My 92 SSE has at least two problems with the heat/AC

1) the temp on the climate control head unit flashes.

2) The only air is from the winshield vents no matter what I do. I checked the vacuum resevoir about two hours after shutting the car off and there was still a good vacuum present so I'm assuming there isn't a vacuum leak.

Any advice??

If the res has vacuum then it's time to look for vacuum at the HVAC programmer located above the passenger side footwell. There will be many vacuum lines there. We'll need to search for posts by Randman as to how it all operates. Most likely there is one actuator that is malfunctioning.

This is not a monitored item of the system, therefore I think your flashing temp is another issue.

Your ECC head unit can do self-diagnostics. Go to Techinfo, print the article, and take it out to your car. Let us know what codes you get. Then make sure the vacuum lines at the vacuum accumulator are intact. It's between the maxifuse relay center cover and windshield wiper motor assembly under the hood at the top of the firewall. It's a black plastic box that looks like part of the relay cover. Connections are underneath. Check them there, and follow them back to the manifold.

Nevermind I found the right one.

Ok, got code 48 from the ECC so apparently I have no freon, guess thats why the air was never cold. How difficult is it to make the switch to R134?

Clear that code 48. It likely means nothing. I get that code on my 93 twice a year, clear it and go on. For the last 5 years, too.

And my AC is ice-cold.

Have you checked those vacuum lines?

Yes, I've checked the lines around the VAC canister everything looks good. How do I check the VAC lines at the HVAC controller? DO those lines just pull out of the connectors?

Ok, I found where the purple vac hose connects to the black hose from under the hood, I was able to get it apart and verify that I do have vac to the hvac controller. Is there some way to test the controller?
