Chimes and "check guages" light

We went out to drive our 92 the other day and when it starts, the check guages light is illuminated and you get the chimes constantly, does not quit. It runs and starts fine. I noticed that the check guages light doesn't seem to be as bright as it should be? Maybee thats just me. Could this be a Pos. battery cable corrosion issue? Thanks

What did the checking of the gauges show? Nothing?

you are very close! I would check both cables, Bro. positive and negative as well. My 92 did that exact same thing this summer and the negative cable darn near came off in my hand when i pulled on it to check it! Got new from autozone for 12.00 cash and was back on the road no problems since! I hope this helps a little.

Good luck and be patient! These 92 Bonevilles can take a beating. My own has 174,000 miles and still rolling on. And get a manuel if you don't already have one. They are worth their weight in gold info wise!!!

So is it safe to say all of the guages were in the normal zones? :?

Big Poppa 10-24-2006 11:37 AM

Mark,

Thats it exactly. My own problem was just that! All gauges were in the clear..but yet that dam check gauges and chimes would sound off. Oil was good, temp was good and volts was good and so on. But she would stumble and hiccup and then clear. Battery cables all the way man!! Especially here in South texas, the heat is just brutal!

Yes, all the guages were in the normal ranges. Our 92 has 22500 on it and it's still a great car. I need to replace all 4 struts really bad but other than that and the above problem, it's an awesome car.

So, did re-cabling the battery solve the the original problem? I'm at a loss. : )

I havnt had this problem personnaly but, for the experience I have on cars, I can make a good guess. The way it sounds to me, with the lights and dinging goin off and the lights being dim, and the heat, It would most likely be the battery cables. If you have the money to replace both, go for it. Its better to be safe than sorry. Besides, bonnevilles are beautiful cars, lets tey to keep them on the road for as long as possible. If we're good to them, theyll be even better to us.
