Default Ignition Key flakey

Around half the time I turn the key in my ignition, there'* nothing. Just nothing happens at all. I try turning the key again, and voila -we start right up. Yes, my ignition key has a resistor thing in it.

I swapped my ignition key with the one my wife has one her keychain. I have no problem. Every time I try to start the car, it starts.

What'* the scoop on these funky keys? Do they go bad, or what? They're expensive, right? And do I have to go to a dealer to get a new one?

Ugh.
