From my work to home its a 10 mile highway drive, i merged onto the highway tonight, got about 5 miles down, realized my temp gage is above its half point...okay, its not to far, should be okay, a few miles later it was passing the small notch at about the 2 o'clock positon, as i exited to my exit, had my heat on full, hood open on first notch for more air, and both cooling fans were going full out, i pull into a closed gas station about 2 miles from my house, because now the needle is just above the red zone, and the low coolant light just came on, i pull in, shut it off, right away i see steam...at 70mph, you see no steam apparently cause i didnt. I open the hood, first thing i see is coolant all over the water pump, appeared to me the pumps weep hole had let go, and that was that...call my dad, hes on his way with coolant, in the mean time i look, notice that its not the pump, but its the line above the pump that goes into underneath the supercharger, its broken off at the engine, the plastic/metal piece that normally this hose fits over is broke off inside the hose, broken clean flush right off the block....question, how does this happen..thats friggen odd....
my 3 month 5000 km warranty SHOULD cover this, i hope....
has it happend to anyone else before?
needless to say, i let the car cool WAY down, added two jugs of water (all we had for now glad its not gunna get cold tonight) i got 3/4 of the way home, temp gage was up at the red zone again, low coolant light came on, and then the temp gage started to bounce around as if the car was actually cooling off, my guess is, it was drying up.... poor thing, better not of done any damage...

It's happened before. That's the coolant bypass fitting. Mine is intact at 111k miles, but is being replaced with metal right now along with the water pump, timing gears and chain, cam, and a bunch of other stuff.

hey, this exact thing happend to me back in the summer of 04, exact same symptoms, about 70mph and the temp gauge goes rapidly towards the red, i replaced the water pump like an idiot at work, with out noticing that the nipple on my 92 se had broken clean off from the top of the manifold, i towed it home, and was able to use a large flat blade screwdriver to stick in the hole and twist the remaining peice of crap plastic nipple. This was not the end of my problems, once i installed the new nipple and hoked the hose back onto it, filled the resivor and the radior back up to normal levels and started the engine, it still would over heat................grrrrrrrrrrrrrr..........so what i did was shut the engine off, let it cool and removed the thermostat....................and to my suprise no coolant.....it was dry behind it in the block, there was air thier so the the thermostat would not pop open to let coolant flow.........REMEDY, fill the engine block up too with the 50/50 coolant mix replace the thermostat and cover....and run engine,.........that was 24000 miles ago and my car is still runnin good at 190000.........good luck and hope this helps

It's very common. It happens to all 92/93's sooner or later. I think in 94 GM changed the design back to metal.

One of the most common things to happen to these. Many times it gets confused for a water pump (even by me). Use a drill bit to get it out, make sure it's very sharp and fits super tight, smack it in with a hammer, then slowly rotate it counter-clockwise to remove it. Some are more stubborn that others. The replacement will be brass ;) like GM should have done first.

Actually, I think it was 95. I know my 94 had a plastic one that let go on the highway in the middle of nowhere. :x

i had mine crack on my mom a few years ago. Shut down and waited for a tow-truck to get it home.

This is the rad hose fitting into the block correct? Whats involved in the replacement, just a new fitting on the end of the hose, or does the LIM have to come off or what?
