Default CODE 0440

please help me ! The service engine light soon came on. I went to auto zone and they told m it was a code 440 . the definition is EVAPORATIVE EMISSION CONTROL SYSTEM MALFUNCTION . I do NOT want to spend 100.00 on O2 sensors and the light will still be there! the auto zone guy couldn't tell code 440 from his weight so he was no help there. Maybe i'll see the 5 star generals come throught here and help a 1 star bonneville owner out

THANKS

When was the last time you changed the filter element in the Charcoal Canister!? Yes there is a filter in the bottom of it that most people forget about! When this filter gets clogged up, the canister can't breathe & could throw a code!

While you're at it, make sure the 2 1/4" diameter lines are still connected to the cannister. They have flexible tubing joints and unions, and get cracked easily, causing leaks. If they suffer from heat damage, they can just fall off. Very easy to see when you pull your airbox to access the canister!

I pulled the canister to find there is no way to get inside . I washed a sponge like filter thats on the little box on top I think it'* called a purge valve but thats the only thing that looks remotely like a filter and it was not even dirty, Should the canister have a way to open? All the hoses way almost new and everything was connected. The system does not look that hard . I just don't see where it could be f#*$ed up . Please help , car runs fine just hate the ******* light!!!

Ummmm.....I'm thinking if the ECM has detected an evap emissions fault, it'* possibly electrical in nature. Checking the purge valve might not be a bad idea (the solonoid on the top of the evap canister). It should have some value of fairly low resistance.....not open, not shorted. You can also jumper one pin to ground, and the other to 12v. You should be able to hear and feel the solonoid engaging and disengaging. There'* a small port on the solonoid body. Connect a piece of clean tubing to it. With the valve open, you should be able to blow through it, closed, you won't If you can in either state, the valve is stuck open, if you can't in either state, the valve is faulty and won't open.

As far as changing the filter, I don't know how to open the canister.....and it'* buried under my airbox. My airbox will be out tomorrow, so I can check it then if you don't have an answer yet.

Good luck!

When you turn the canister upside down, you'll notice a yellow filter material inside the canister in the large opening in the bottom. THAT'* the FILTER! You see there is a drain hole in the bottom of the bucket that holds the canister in! That hole gets plugged with dirt & sand choking off the air to the canister!
