brake line repair
Instead of bumping my other thread I'll start a new one for a couple new questions. I scoped out my brake line rot yesterday, tried to remove the section but the fittings were too fused and I can't get it off.
How much would I expect to pay to have a shop replace a 5-6' section of line, or less?
If I somehow do it myself could I use a compression union even though it says not to use it on brake systems? These unions supposedly flare the tube on their own according to the parts guy.

A compression fitting crushes a ferrule (looks like a bead) onto the tubing decreasing the diameter of the tube underneath it in a process called swaging. If the fitting is tightened too far, the tubing can be damaged, if not enough, the ferrule may slip allowing the joint to leak under pressure. Either way, a slight restriction of flow is produced in the line.
Compression fittings are not as safe as flare fittings, and are not recommended for brake lines.
It is typical to find brake fittings rusted and stuck together. Often, you need to go to the nearest brass fitting in the system. They usually can be undone. This is a great place for PB penetrant and patience. Also, use line (flare) wrenches that tightly fit the nuts you are trying to undo.
A shop might charge $100? Just a guess.

I'll second the recommendation of PB Blaster, patience, and buying the correct size flare nut wrenches if you do it yourself. Those wrenches are worth the money, IMO.

I don't have ANY (well, very little) brake pressure. I used to have normal pressure though it was leaking, but I guess it got so bad now I have barely any all the time. Really not good considering I drove 90 miles a day. :?
I found one of the brass fitttings in front of the gas tank. That'* the nearest one, and to the wheel it'* about 6' bent line. I hope the PB works, if it doesn't I don't know what I will do..
What is the size of our fittings on the lines? It looks like the ones on the line I bought are the right size, but that'* just the threads, the actual head of the nut is smaller.

I don't remember off the top of my head what the wrench size is for the brake line fittings. I'll have to check when I get home tonight.

I just though of another question. If I do not remove the fittings from the very ends, and just cut out a section, what do I use to join the two flare nut fittings that will be on both ends, since the unions are not recommended?
I'll try to remove the ends first, but even if I do my section of line isn't quite long enough to bend like the original and I'll probably have to cut and flare ends. I'd love to avoid that but it probably won't happen.
