Check if your brake lights are coming on. Check your battery cables as well, if you have a bad connection the shifter may not work.

I agree with Dan about the brake lights. If the brakes lights do not work, the solenoid that releases the shifter lock will also not work.

Solenoid could be worn out, I have access to thousands of them since I build shifters, they are very delicate it wouldnt surprise me if its worn

My old Lincoln did that. It was the Brake-Transaxle Shift Interlock Solenoid, as everyone said. If you need to move ur car (I wouldn't suggest driving if u have no brake lights), turn key to on position (first clikck), put ur car in neutral, apply brake, start car, and put into gear.

I tried that already it was in my manual..I can't even shift it out of park then

ok I check the brake lights and they're both working

The interlock solenoid is probably my problem as well ['96 LeSabre]. Sometimes I can't get it out of park; sometimes I can't. Yes, I have my foot on the brake, yes, my brake lights work and yes, the key is 'on'. There's an interlock somewhere that's not working. Can you tell me where this interlock is and about how much a replacement costs?
