Exclamation 1993 SSEI Oil Pressure Gauge Problem

Hi Guys,

i have a problem with my Oil Pressure Gauge.

Since i have the Car it ever showed me full oil pressure even if i haven't start the car. --> bad oil pressure sender.

So i changed it, and the new one shows me zero Oil Pressure. If i hit the Gas the needle is moving nearly a half of a millimeter not more... But in fact of the low pressure it shows SES...

Because i worried about the bad oil pressure i checked it with a manual Oil Pressure Gauge and it shows me around 5 Bar = 500kpa = 72psi when it idles and even more when i hit the gas, so every is perfect. And the engine runs great.

BUT where could be the problem? Is it the Gauge itself? Is there a way to test it?

The Cable to the Pressure sending unit has 4 wires, is there a way to test if there is something wrong?

I hope you could help me.

Best wishes from Germany

Manni

Is there no way to check the gauge manual, to see if it works right?

There is a way. You can substitue resistors into the place of the sensor. Unfortunately I don't know what range of resistors show you which values in your year.

ah, ok. great. so i could use variuos resistors. i will check that.

is there maybe a known issue where i could search first? maybe a cable problem?!?

Thanks and Greetings

This is from the Autozone website. If you create a free account they have repair information online. I did a search for Oil pressure guage and found this under "Product and how to info" They may have a wiring diagram but I did not see one.

"Oil pressure can be checked at the sending unit passage with an externally mounted mechanical oil pressure gauge. To get accurate results from the test, make sure you follow the manufacturer'* recommendations and compare your findings to specifications.

Testing the Oil Pressure Gauge

Test the gauge by grounding the wire that leads to the sending unit on the block.
When the wire is grounded with the key switch on, the gauge should show maximum oil pressure, or the light should go on.
If either happens, the gauge and wiring are good and the sending unit is at fault.
Testing Oil Pressure

Pressure can be tested by temporarily installing an oil pressure gauge in place of the sending unit. Before testing, look up the oil pressure specifications for your vehicle in the appropriate service manual.

Bring the engine up to operating temperature.
Now shut the engine off.
Locate the oil pressure sending unit; usually it is on the lower side of the engine block.
disconnect the wire from the sending unit and use an Open Ended Wrench to remove the sender. using pliers can damage the unit.

An oil pressure sending unit is removed with a special socket. Courtesy of Chrysler Corporation.
Tighten the oil pressure test gauge into the hole in the block where the sender was removed.

Measuring oil pressure. Reprinted with permission.
Check the engine'* oil level and fill, if required.
WARNING
Be extremely careful when working near a running engine. Always wear safety goggles or glasses with side shields when working around moving machinery and be sure that your clothing is not loose.
Now turn the engine on and check the oil pressure on the gauge.
Watch as the engine warms to note any excessive drops due to temperature.
Make sure the engine speed is set to specifications for testing pressure.
if necessary, us a Tachometer and adjust the engine idle speed.
Record the measured oil pressure, then turn off the engine.
Compare the test results with the manufacturer'* specifications.
If the oil pressure is within specifications, this shows that the oil pressure sending unit may not be working correctly.
In many cases, replacing the oil sending unit will correct the problem.
After the test is complete, reinstall the oil pressure sending unit, start the engine, and confirm there are no leaks."

Hi Guys,

This Problem is still unsolved. The Oil Pressure is perfect, but it shows ever 0 with a new Sending unit and i don't know why.

The Gauge itself works. When i ground the wire it shows full.

Maybe there is anybody out there who knows about a such problem.

Best wishes

I'm fighting the same problem of a '98 SE but mine drops to 5-10 psi at idle when warmed up. Another known issue is corroded gauge pins in the cluster. The gauge has 4 pins on the back and there is a circuit board that slips over these pins. Unfortunately this was not the problem with mine.

This is a poke.... but I hear that a lot of electrical issues are caused by the grounding buss under the carpet on both the passenger and drivers front floor. Remove your plastic door sill protector and you will see the ground buss taped to the plastic flex, remove the buss bar and clean.

If you decide to remove the gauge cluster.... be careful of the shift indicator string that clips to the bottom of the column cover.

Here is what I tried so far:

changed oil and filter
removed the oil pan and cleaned the oil pickup tube
replaced pickup tube gasket
replaced the pressure sender
removed the oil filter assembly and cleaned the oil bypass valve, replaced gasket
removed the gauge cluster and cleaned gauge pins
resoldered the connector on the main gauge input of the cluster
cleaned both buss bars
removed all ground wires on both fenders, cleaned, reinstalled

Next... manual gauge pressure reading (didn't have access to one until now)
cleaned and tightened all battery terminals
