Do I HAVE to run 93 octane in my SSEi?
Gas here in VA is hitting $2.39 for 93! Is there no end in sight to the greed of OPEC???
Um, for everyday, mediocre commuting... can I use 89? How about 1/2 & 1/2? ANYTHING!!! I can't afford to drive my Bonnie, and I just had to put new brake hoses and a polyu. sway link kit in it. (Some chuckle-head put a cheapo link on ONE SIDE of the car, with predictable results- ie, the link pretzelled and mushed the little weak rubber bushings). The car handles like a million bucks, but unfortunately it takes about that much to fill it anymore!

Whatever you do, don't use 87. If you're engine is running perfect, is tuned up nicely, you may be able to pull off 89. However, not if you have a pulley.
Thermostat
Exhaust work
colder range plugs
Might all help you get to be able to use 89. However there'* still a risk of detonation, especially if you have a heavy foot. 91 or higher is recommended, so maybe mixing 93 and 89 if you don't have 91 in your area is possible.

I realize he'* moded and needs the extra octane. I thought the factory manual says you can use whatever, just don't expect performance w/o super duper.
Right now I'm running 87 and it'* got power and enjoying life. I was trying not to give it super, cause I'd get hooked on the power.

Over time, that'* bad for your car. In the winter, with no heat, you can probably get away with a lower octane and not get knock, but I wouldn't run anything less than 91 in the summer for damn sure.
The funny thing is that I ran mid-grade here for awhile as a test with my scantool. Our local grades are 87/89/92. With 89 in the winter, I get about 5° of KR. In the summer, it'* BAD. 10-15° as compared to 92. Summertime, it cuts my efficiency so bad, it'* actually cheaper in fuel costs to run the 92 because I get better mileage.
So my suggestion (try it yourself to prove it) is that in a PINCH, 89 will probably fly on a STOCK SSEi for winter use, but in the summer, it'* actually costing you more money in fuel in the long run, and potentially damaging your engine.
