Car almost stalls on right hand turns,TSB Fuel Pump Strainer
 

Does anyone know details on the TSB regarding this.

The condition that I'm trying to correct is when I have 1/2 a tank or less of gas and I make right hand turns the car hesitates, starves for fuel, and almost stalls.

Has anyone corrected this TSB ?

I have access to Mitchell on Demand but it isn't to clear to me, if I have to replace the strainer only if I have the Nippondenso 51mm fuel pump or if this applies to other brands of pumps as well. I think there are 4 different brands of fuel pumps that these cars were manufactured with.

hes got a 92 SSEi...and ur gonna have problems with that tank...

Baffles in the tank are floating around and screwing up the fuel flow....Replace tank.

For clairication, replacing the strainer with the newer different strainer (as mentioned in the TSB) won't fix the problem ?
Would I not hear the Baffles clanking around inside the tank ? Is this common that they break loose ?

Very common...Get a tank from a 94/95, replace your strainer while you';re in there.....Then you're good to go and move on to the next repair or what not. :wink:

This could very well be JUST THE STRAINER!! That is what the TSB pertains to, not a bad tank. I had the same exact problem, replacing the strainer fixed it. My baffles were just fine. Same exact problem with my brother's 92 SE and my mom's 92 Olds 88.

Anyone with a 92 had a bad tank? I don't remember more than one, Ol' blue eyes. There have been dozens of bad strainers here, however.

Replace the strainer. My '92 had the same problem when I bought it @ 107K miles. The previous owner warned me that at 1/2 tank, it seemed to run out of fuel quickly and mine would also stall on clockwise cloverleaf ramps.

Upon dropping the tank, the strainer "mesh" was coated with "material" (dirt?) that would not let fuel thru very well. The only "clean" spot was near the connection of the strainer to the pump. I actually couldn't believe that it could "suck" fuel thru it. Considering the load that it might have put on the fuel pump, I replaced that as well. The baffle well/sump that the pump & sender assembly fits into is most likely cracked, but with the amount of miles I had, I left it as is and put it all back together.

171K miles now & still going strong.

My 93 had the baffles problem... always stalled when having below a 1/4 tank getting on the e-way.
