there is also some stuff on on the market called hc-12a its good for r-134 or r-12 systems unfortunatly you have to order it off line. Its suppose to be eco friendly and the structure of the freon is diff from tradition freon the molecules are bigger takeing less and is least likey to leak out a small hole in the system. I just charged up my old mustang with it works awsome
http://www.foxtoolsupply.com/cart/ I would recommend this stuff I have had leaks that would render the ac system useless and empty in bout a week or so I have used this stuff and have gotten years and it is more efficient and blows ice cubes! for your case you could by the r-12 recharge kit to fill it but you would have to have somebody pull a vacuum on the system before filling it..

What you really should do is learn about the system first.
Freon doesn't expire or disappear. Our AC systems are supposed to be sealed. Much like the freon in your refridgerator (stop looking at it like that...lol, it'* for food cooling). If AC isn't working, there'* a reason and usually it'* because the system doesn't have enough freon. That could mean a huge leak, little leak, but there'* a leak. Once there'* a leak, moisture gets into the system. Moisture is an AC systems enemy.
The proper way to fix an AC system is look for and fix any leaks. Vacuum the system and ensure it holds the vacuum (this proves it is sealed). Then fill it with freon. When doing all of this..there are parts like the orifice tube and drier/accumulator that should be replaced for the best working system. There is also an oil in the system that lubricates the compressor.
