A/C problem - seems electrical - any suggestions?
 

I have a 93 SE and the A/C packed in today. A friend checked it and says there is no electrical power and seems like a short of some kind. Any idea how I can fix this. My blower fan went the other day and I had to replace it. Don't know if this contributed to it or not. I know a fuse blew but that's been replaced and it still doesn't work. Any advice would be appreciated.

We're gonna need a lot more detail here. Just to start with:

1) Did your blower fan work properly after you replaced it? (and is it still working now?)

2) What exactly is _not_ working now? (i.e. Does it blow air, but the air is not cold? Does it not move air at all?)

3) Do you have the electronic controls or the manual A/C-heater knob controls?

4) Exactly which fuse blew and was replaced? Is it still good now or has it blown again?

The blower fan is now working but no cold air.
It blew a 35amp fuse located under the hood, which I replaced and the fuse is now working.
It has manual control knobs.
The compressor does not kick in. There appears no power going to it.

Okey-doke. I think the first thing to check is whether there's enough Freon (or R-134a or whatever) refrigerant in the system; it won't activate the compressor clutch if not. Reason I asked whether you had electronic controls is because on those, the temperature display will blink for the first two minutes of driving if there's a problem (such as low refrigerant).

I guess as a quick test (until you can hook up the system to test the charge), you could jumper the pressure switch connection on the refrigerant line to see if that turns the compressor on. If it does, you might just need a recharge, but do _not_ leave the jumper in place in the meantime, as nothing good will come of that. (i.e. The system is not letting the compressor run with low refrigerant in order to save itself from damage.)

Freon in the line is OK. Good pressure. Tried the switch thing but nothing. There is power going to that switch but nothing down at the compressor, if that makes sense. Is there any other type of relay or switch other than the fuses that could conrol that?

If no power is reaching the compressor clutch, then yes, something further up the line is not switching it on, but you need a proper diagnostic approach at this point to find out which, what, where and why. I'm hoping someone with more A/C experience than me (i.e. practically everybody) can jump in here.
