Default Should I do a short block or junk the car?

Have a 97 B'ville with 192,000 miles and spun a bearing. Cause was transmission slip while cruse control. RPMs pegged before I noticed it. It has been a good car with no major work on engine or transmission. If I fix the engine with a short block what will I need to do to fix transmission? My concern is car is 15 year old car with almost 200,000 mile and what will be the next thing to go?

Well, if your going the short-block route, you might as well grab a used trans from the junkyard. The 4T60-E is a common transmission. If you do get one from a junk yard, make sure you grab one from a Bonneville. Buicks etc have different gear ratios. BUT, they will still work. Might throw your speedo off a little. Cheaper than having the trans rebuilt IMO.

Mike, that would put the cost at around $7-800 plus my labor. While this is not bad, is the car worth it? I had a 1990 GP with over 250,000 miles before it gave up the ghost. Should I spend the money or put it toward a newer vehicle? If the vehicle had less mileage or newer I would do it. It seems the car is on the edge of which way to go. Any opinion is helpful. Thanks in advance.

If the body is in good shape, no other anomalies are present, then I'd say its worth it.
I use to own a white 95 Bonneville SE, I found a a 97 SE on craigslist for $800. With a rod knock. All I had to do was swap the engine out. Was it worth it? Heck ya!

Really it depends on if your willing to put the labor into it.

It is not supercharged just to plan SE. Body and interior is still good, even the drives seat. I was hoping to get to 250,000 miles before I got rid of it. If it was newer and less mileage it would be a no brainier. If it had 250,000 then I would not. Why wife and I talked and we are going to rebuild it as the driver to and from work, 60 miles each way. We are taking your advise with the junk yard transmission. Thanks everyone for your advise.

jy trans dont have the updates. and if you want to get 50k more you have to find one thats got less than 50k on it, not so easy. i found a place that would rebuild mine for 900, so now its good for another 100k at least

Thanks for the advise. The old one was the original with only fluid changes. We bought the car with 20,0000 miles. Only major work, now that I remember, was the intake manifold at around 130K. I thought I would replace it at the rebuild. With luck I hope to get 50 to 100K more from the car.
