Wheeeee! Time to get greasy!
I'm about to undertake my biggest (yet still not so big) repair effort yet : replacing my water pump. I'll take pics and turn this into some sort of walkthrough to try and give back to the community which has helped me out so many times 
In the meantime, any tips on flushing out all the crap in my cooling system w/o one of those cans of chemically stuff?

Flushing it? Or draining it? Drain, just pull the Lower Radiator hose. It'll get everywhere, but it'll do. I'm not the best at explaining the flush.. it'* really easy though.. i'll let another member chime in on that one.

Maybe i'm looking at the wrong hose, but is the lower radiator hose the one with the sensor that plugs into the radiator? It'* the only one I can really see, and that petcock is being SUCH a !@#!$%

use the petcock... I know its a b**** but use it..... changing the water pump is fairly easy, only took me an hour and a half.(my first time also) If you are somewhat mechanically inclined you should have no problem.

If you are talking about the radiator petcock, that is a good choice.. but you need to pull the LRH anyways, and more coolant WILL come out when you pull the LRH.

Hour and a half for a water pump????????
Russian...were you in a time warp when you did this swap. Everyone I've heard talk about it says close to 5 hours.
Take your time, enjoy the scrapes and scratches. Cost savings will be worth it.

I could probably [objective, not by experience] in two hours. It'* super easy, pull serpentine belt, idler, LRH, WP pulley, WP bolts, clean, reverse

Not in a time warp just am that good 
Its not that hard if you have good instructions. Once ya drain the coolant and get the belt off its strait forward.
