A/C Blowing hot air
 

(I know there's a couple of these threads but my problem is unique.) :shock:

My car is almost ready, but the mechanic took a look at the problem with the A/C. The freant is fully charged and is ice cold, there are no leaks, and the air is blowing through. No codes are pulled. He thinks that the door that opens and closes to ether allow cool or hot air through could be blocked with a pencil or even broken. Could there be anything else and is it easy to fix?

Waiting to give the go-ahead to tell him to take apart the dash. If its something stupid, something else or if its an easy job id rather do it myself (but mom probably wont allow it and would rather pay someone else to do it. :evil: )

Forgot to mention also that its the 96 with this problem and it has auto climate control.

I'd think you need to pull the glove box and observe the rod movement.

If it's the actuator or the programmer... here's a write up. SIR disabling is being added, please take proper safetly precautions.

Couple more things I forgot to mention, mechanic quote the job for $500 bucks. :roll:

The blower was replaced when the previous owner had it about last year in Febuary. Whole engine taken out so it could be replaced.

Your problem doesn't sound that unique to me. ;) It sounds just like the door actuator issue we've been addressing quite often here lately.

$500 sounds like highway robbery to me, especially if you consider that it may only need recalibration.

Read the lengthy article that Bill linked you to above and make your decision based on that.

What???? Did I read this right? The engine does not have to be removed to replace a blower motor. There must be more to this story. Unless the motor was pulled for other reasons, do NOT go back to this shop!

No, you did not read this right. Key word here is "previous owner". :) My current mechanic right now did not replace the blower just now to fix my current A/C issue. I am merely stating this in case there is something the previous mechanic might have missed while working on the system.

Whats the cause of this problem and is it relatively easy to fix?

Hi, I had a similiar problem and was able to fix it. You can do it. CHeck behind the glove box like they said and if that arm doesnt move then let us know. My car was only blowing out the top and bottom of the dash. There was a clogged vacuum line and I was able to reroute it. Let us know what you see.

I am necroposting, but in my own thread, and only because my problem has not been solved.

I have done the alignment procedure, and even tapped that air mix controll door to the left of the actuatior arm so it would have bias towards colder air, but no good. I even shoved that thing all the way to the left with a screwdriver when I disconnected it from the actuator to test it, and it still did not blow cold air, it was just moderate, even with the arm for the air mix was completely to the left.

AC is charged, its dripping like hell whenever its on so I know its cold and I can feel it in the pipe, but that same coldness is not being transfered into the air. Any other ideas?

Also, is it normal that it is doing a self-diagnosis EVERY TIME the car starts? Every time I start it, it blows hot air for 50 seconds, then after that it goes to the set temperature. Its damn annoying and im strongly considering downgrading with a manual system.

How long have you had the car? Did the AC work when you got it? I have never been in a mid 90's Bonnie where I thought the AC was working right they always seem to be pretty lousy when it comes to cold air and extreme heat. Have you just lokced the door in the cold position and just driven it that way, or do you think it's not cool enough and just shut it off? on my Taurus it's 40* within 2 minutes and is the coldest AC system I have ever owned My wifes car takes about 10 minutes to reach the same temp. The last time I put a gauge in the vent of the Bonniville I worked on about a year ago when it was working fine I drove it about 25 miles in 98* temp day and it never got below 52*. If you phyically move the door I can't see any reason for the temp not to get nice and cold. But like I said every Bonniville I have been in seemed a little lacking in the AC department.
