Have any of you removed the power steering pump on a supercharged series 1?
I did it on my supercharged '92 several months ago, and I'm curious to know from those who have done it, if there'* an easier way to do it. Disconnecting it was easy, but removing it from the engine bay was not...I wasn't able to remove it from above...it could only be removed from below, and I had to rotate it in several orientations and push it past different areas along the way out, and some force was required at different points along the way.

I even thought about removing the pulley first, but there'* not enough room to get a puller in there.

And I wonder, is it easer to remove on the newer supercharged series engines?

I bet it'* a piece of cake on the normally aspirated engines of any series, but not so easy on the supercharged counterparts.

I can't say for sure, as I haven't done one on the series I, but I just swapped one out on the series II. The instructions say to take it out from underneath, which like you found, would have taken some doing. As it was, I did it while doing the UIM/LIM so the tensioner and expansion tank was removed. It made the job much easier, and I took it out the top. If I ever have to do mine, I think I'll do it the same way (by removing the tensioner and expansion tank). The way it looks, it would be much less of a headache that way.

As I recall, removal from the top wasn't an option because the alternator bracket was in the way, and it'* a lot of work to remove on the supercharged series 1. I think I began by beginning to remove the alternator and soon discovered that it wasn't going to happen that way because of the bracket. I'm sure I would have thought about simply removing the tensioner or other easy items if they were the only things in the way, but thanks anyway.

Actually, the alternator is attached to the tensioner on the series II also. So, the alternator bracket, alternator, and tensioner would all have to be removed. From what I saw while I was under there working on the connections, I'll still take it out the top.

While I've never done it..

I believe I saw a guy at a junkyard pull the tire and splash shields from the side to remove it out the wheel well.

Did mine on my 94ssei this summer. Had to remove the pulley from the pump in order to get the pump out and then I put the pulley back on after it was back in place. Wasn't to bad of job with the special pulley puller/installer tool.
