Default 97 Bonneville gas leakage problem

have a 97 Bonneville SE and it is leaking gas recently, I sent it to repair shop and was told that the sending unit got problems. they asked for $300 for replacement. I have no idea abou the price for this replacement and wonder if $300 is too expensive for such a replacement?
many thanks in advance.

sorry this is my first time to use this forum and think it may be more proper to post it here rather than on general section. I am trying to find out how to delete this post.

Hi there newbie... Welcome to the club.

Fuel can leak from the sender, as well your gauge issue is most likely a sender problem as well.

1993 SLE ... remember back to when we pulled that tank/sender.. the lines are metal and can rust...as well a gas tank leak could also be the culprit.

In answer to your question, $300 for someone else to do the repair is not too bad, though it could possibly be done cheaper. Make sure that whoever does the repair at least includes a new fuel filter and connecting lines for that price.

And yes, the gas guage issue is most likely due to the bad sending unit.

I called the repair shop and they asked for extra $16 for fuel filter replacement. they said the metal lines are from sending unit and other lines are plastic and don't need to be replaced. is $16 reasonable for a fuel filter replacement?

If you are changing out a bad sending unit, chances are there'* rust up there on the metal lines. I know that I would want to make sure I got all the crap out of the old fuel filter if it were me.

If you are at all mechanically inclined, the fuel filter is an easy change that you could do yourself afterwards. Your call, but do consider changing it unless yours is very recently new.
