Default MAP sensor?

What is a MAP sensor and what does it do?

I just got my car back from the mechanic, post uim failure, and i noticed he replaced the MAP sensor...is this normal to have replaced after UIM failure or was it already in need of replacement?

Manifold Absolute Presure sensor...I don't know if it'* common to replace, but it sounds normal to me.

Used to monitor the difference in pressure between the intake manifold at outside atmosphere.
