Anyone changed air conditioning compressor?
 

How big of a deal is it to change out the air conditioning compressor? Mine is making a very annoying racket, on or off. I added oil, but the noise persists. It is still cold, but I am worried the compessor will lock up, and will fry my Gatorback belt...I priced a rebuilt one at $188 with a lifetime warranty.

Your best bet may be to ask these guys or get an air conditioning manual. The part itself is not as difficult as following the correct procedures to avoid leaks or contamination. Be careful when buying replacement compressors. You want to buy them from a reliable source like this one or else you may end up repeatedly swapping them out. Don't forget vacuuming the system down and adding the correct amount of oil.

I'm not completely sure that you need to remove the compressor from the car, nor evacuate the system to replace a noisy bearing.

Wait a minute, are you complaining that your A/C is too cold? LOL.

Your vent temperature should be around 36-43 degrees on MAX A/C (recirc mode) if operating correctly.

If the evaporator is clogged then then there would be less flow through your vents. However a clogged condensor would prevent proper cooling.

Your evaporator should not freeze up. It would be good to know the high side pressure. Does your compressor cycle on and off or does it run continuously?

A/C can be a funny thing. Sometimes you can have restrictions in some of the lines. Most of what you described seems normal. The hotter it gets outside the less it will cycle. While in hot stop and go traffic it should still come out cool, but this is the biggest challenge for the system. If I was working on it the first thing I would check is to see if your freon needs to be topped off.
