Default 180 stat, whats wrong here

ok, I put in the180 degree t-stat, and then I drove from my dads house to my house (about 15 miles) and while i was one the highway driving 60, the whole time it stayed steady at about 195 (with the old 195 it ran at 200) while i was in town i left my car running for a while, when i got back in it was at the next mark from the 200 mark on the gauge for a 93 ssei (215-225) not too far off where i could expect, but it kinda shocked/scared me seeing it up that high, but by the time i got home, it was back to about 195 i drove maybe 1-2 miles in town, is this normal for a 180 stat?

I would see 195 as an unacceptable difference from 180. Someone else had a similar complaint and when they changed to a different 180 t-stat the problem went away. Where did you get it?

Hmm...well someone correct me if I'm wrong but isn't 196deg the limit where the computer retards the final degree and after that having a cooler t-stat does nothing? I believe thats what it is and if so your 195 running t-stat is doing you no good. Try zzperformance for your t-stat needs. I got a 160t-stat and am satisfied with them and I've heard good about the 180'*. 12 bucks but hell if the one you have now is doing no good...

on the zzperformance site both of the t-stats the 180 and the 160 are drilled, mines not does it matter, and it says the 160 is recommended for the supercharged 3800????

To run the 160 tstat your either going to have to hook your fans to a switch or splice in an adjustable thermo switch to keep your car from over heating. The drilled t-stats will make it take longer for your engine to warm up, obviously, because they let a constant flow of coolant by. Trying to make a cooling system designed for 195deg keep your engine at 160deg without fans is very hard and impossible if your sitting still. I've not dealt with the drilled 180t-stats so I'm not the expert there, as I understand it its what plenty of people run and I haven't heard any big complaints. Ahhh...I really don't know what to say here. If its a persistant problem try a 180 from another company, hell they're only a couple bucks and 10min. Try ADTR I think he carries one

Well if your looking for performance over gas mileage you can go with it. But like I said it will require other things to be done. Otherwise go with 180, most do

I had the same exact problem using the 180 Stant SuperStat (in my '92 SE) until it was brought to my attention that the SuperStat had a problem with its pellet hitting a section of the inside of the t-stat/coolant housing when it was opening up... The stat seems to be to deep and will make contact with the engine when it opens...The same for Robertshaw stats.

Go and pick up the cheaper stat at NAPA (it'* a basic Stant model) and you'll see a noticeable difference in where your temp gauge reads compared to the more expensive SuperStat even while crusing on a highway! Only at idle does my gauge goes slightly above the 200 degree mark also, but no more than that.
