Either Dex gone acidic or perhaps someone used an oxalic acid cooling system cleaner and failed to flush it out properly. The pitting on that LIM is so deep, it appears to perforate to the exterior. I have never seen one that bad. You did not re-install that LIM, I hope?

You are aware that the LIM blinds or blocks one coolant passage on each cylinder head, right? It is common for these "dead ends" to get filled up with sludge, but the corrosion that you have is not common at all.

You got that right!!!. I did a LIM on a 98 Grand Prix that looked like that. 179000 miles on the ORIGINAL Dexcool. The LIM was pitted too. Needless to say it was junk. DO NOT reinstall that LIM. It will leak, guarenteed.
