Trans code 740
Can someone with a service manual look up trans code 740 TCC clutch failure and see what it means and what needs to be done to verify and correct the problem, please.
None of the trans shops in this town will give out any information, they want the car for a few hours and some $$$$ to tell me anything.
Googling gets me some sites that tell me it'* a common problem with 4T60E transmissions dropping out of 4th when oil temps get hot.
How hot is hot? In this case 200 F

Here is what happens..
The PCM monitors the Transaxle fluid temps....
If the PCM sees the tranny get to 260F you can enter limp home mode, or a mode that will lock you out of OD( 4th ) and no lockup..
The TCC Clutch failure could be an issues with the TCC Apply soelnoid too... It would also help to know what the PCM is commanding and what what is actually happening...
1860 I believe would be Trans Component Slipping... This code would come about when the PCM sees a lot more slip than desired..
I would say either the trans is getting too hot... And the PCM is trying to save it...
Or there is an Issue with a TCC apply solenoid...
Hard to say... With the weather where you are right now that trans should never get that hot... Do you have an Actron CP9110?
And I will go look up that code right now

Code P0740 is
Torque Converter Clutch Problem
P0740 will set when
Vehicle is in 3rd or 4th gear
TCC is commanded on by the PCM
Engine RPM/Vehicle speed ratio indicates TCC is not locked
Throttle angle is greater than 10%
Above conditions for over 10 seconds
With the PO740 set the PCM will not allow 4th gear operation

Problem occurs when trans temp gets to 200*F according to my CP9110.
It only gets that hot when climbing a long hill, relativly flat ground or low rolling hills won't get the trans over 180 F, city traffic is OK on temps also.
Clearing the code with the CP9110 restores the use of 4th gear, but by the time I do that the trans temp is down below 200.
I'm not sure what the trans temp is supposed to be but I suspect that mine is running hotter than usual for some reason. A trans cooler is on my list of things to do asap, but I'd like to know if my problems are easily solved or require major surgery.

I don't think the temps are all of the problem.. It could be the TCC Solenoid or a Valve Body issue.. These transmissions will get to 200F...
So it does lock up, and if it get to a certain temperature then it acts up..
Not sure what to tell you there..
When the trans is cool, and you hit OD, what are the TCC slip Rpms?

Hmmmmm.... 15 Rpms of slip falls into the proper category.... so at this point I am nor sure if its the TCC solenoid or the Valve Body.... Hard to say

Can either or both of these be replaced without removing the trans from the car?

You would have to yank the Drivers side axle, And drop that side of the cradle a bit( you'd have to disconnect the Rack from the Column ) to get the Side off the transmission... Once thats removed you should be able to get to the TCC solenoid...

Hello,
I am having the same issue. I was wondering if you did install a tranny cooler and if this fixed it, or what else did you had to do?
Appreciate any input.
PS: my car is a '95 riviera */c
