Default coil pack question

ive been noticing some hesatation(sp) when at a light and under acceleration. so decided to pull a few plugs (which i need ones) and i looked at the coil pack end. 1-5 were fine but 6 was all greyish crust and burn looking and so was the inside of the plug wire cap. i should have gotten a pic, what caused it to be so burn when the others looked new?

This is just a guess, but if the wire cap was not pushed all the way down, or if the surfaces on the post or the wire socket were dirty enough to prevent conduction then arcing would occur. This is what happens to the insides of distributor caps on the contacts after a few months of normal arcing between the contact and the rotor. Same as you describe...crumbly gray-white erosion.

If you have a bad coil, you will have two fouled plugs. Never just one. If it'* just one, it'* the wire or the plug itself.

I just changed my plugs and wires yesterday and my 6th cylinder plug wire was totally toast. I hardly even touched it and it just fell off. I'd really like to know why it did that as well. My car has always ran great. Luckly I had new wires as well before I changed the plugs.

90% of all misfires attributed to a wire will be on the rear (cylinders 2, 4, 6). Heat is the enemy.

When you buy a quality wire set, there should be a small tube of electric grease/dielectric compound. This is for a light coating on the coil towers and plug ends to assist in keeping this kind of corrosion to a miniumum.

You can try to clean it up, apply a little dielectric and keep an eye on it/see if the car runs better. Or consider replacing the coil.

Do not replace a coil unless you have 2 cylinders misfiring that share one coil.

but have noticing a misfire but it was probly due to the #6 coil all crusted up.

what are a good set of wires that come with the dieelectric grease? and how much? i plan on buying some ac delco plugs maybe today afterwork.

so what makes plugs easier to change when engine is cold or hot?

AC Delco wires came pregooped.. if the wires don't come w/goop.. most parts places have the packets sitting on the counter.

Belden (Napa) wires are also a good premium wire.

Plugs should not be in overly tight. Cold is the better way for your hand and arm. You will be working right next to the exhaust manifolds.

As Bill said.. don't need to change a coil if both plugs aren't misfiring, however if the post is destroyed you may need to.. try and clean it up first.
