AC Compressor question

Does the AC compressor spin continuously when the AC is on or is it supposed to intermittently spin and stop?

I just replaced an old AC compressor with a used one and I want to make sure that it is running properly.

When it'* off the clutch disengages, so no spin.

The AC compressor will cycle on and off when it is running or as your describing "intermittently spin and stop"

If it does this a lot though than that would indicate a low freon charge.

So once and a while is fine.......
