my tranny slips when its first started - i'll put it in gear, it'll rev higher than it should and not really move, so i give it a minute - and she'* fine.. SHREDS the tires, 1st and 2nd, shortly thereafter.. (not that i'm doing burnouts in a cold car, just testing its temperment yesterday)
my 92 88 did the same thing for years, it worsened, until it finally stopped moving at 230k.. is there any hope for prolonging my tranny? some kind of service/filter/special fluid i can do that might give it a few miles and/or fix my cold start - sluggishness?

On older 4T60E’*, the input shaft seals shrink and become brittle, causing the line pressure to drop until it warms up. If you put the car in reverse, or low gear (1) -- until the clutches engage, you can eliminate some of the time required to stabilize pressure. There is not much you can do at this point, except to try some Lucus transmission treatment! It will not fix the problem, however, it might help expand the seals, and add enough viscosity to the fluid to help prevent the seal from leaking so bad. BTW, if it’* any comfort to you, I drove one like this for five years, before a rebuild. You just need to become acquainted with the ways to overcome the delay.

HotZ speaks the truth. It is not a dire situation just put the car in 1st to engage then to D and off you go. I don't use overdrive except on the highway.

I like to try to pressurize mine by running the engine for 15 seconds at 2k rpm'* which usually works unless it'* really cold.

One other thing, the tranny fluid being low will make the condition worse. Make sure the level is CORRECT.
