I have had tires losing air quite regularly and was told that the alloy rims are flaking. Has anyone else had that problem or even heard of it?

Yes, I did. I went to a tire shop and they pulled the valve stems and cleaned those up, then cleaned up the bead area and the tires held air with no problems.

It'* fairly common with aluminum wheels. Having the tires and stems pulled and re-mounted, rims cleaned with a wire wheel and a bead sealer will fix your problem

Will be the same process for any finish. The tech should take care not to scuff more than the bead of the rim up with the wire wheel and damage the chrome. That'* all. The oxidation builds up between the metal rim and the rubber bead of the tire seperating the two and causing a leak.
