Thanks guys, I'm definately aware of the 'slow' needle on GM vehicles. My LSS has it; goes about 80-100 miles before moving. So does my Cutlass.

As mentioned, the Bonneville needle doesn't move, or moves very little, the first 200 miles. What I failed to mention is that it also never goes below the half tank mark before it'* nearly out of gas. Definately a problem.

I just got burned on a MAF sensor for my Delta. Both Rockauto and Amazon were incorrect, it was the wrong one. As you know, once you open the package on one of those, you eat the cost if it'* incorrect. 120 bucks down the tube...

So I thought for the pump and sending unit I'd lean toward the experts this time.

Are you sure about that? I have known Rockauto to be more than reasonable on returns, particularly if the part they specify is not the correct one. I would call them.

Well, I purchased it via Amazon due to the free shipping offered. But I always do most of my research on rockauto, save all the parts I need in the cart, and refer back when I compare prices, etc.

Both rockauto and Amazon listed it as correct for the engine; unfortunately it was not.

I actually had rockauto send me the correct part and told me to keep the wrong part they sent. No charge.

Based on my VIN #, it is CAL ID#'* 16259018 and 16257551. Mind you, we cannot download these files from the website. It only shows what has been updated and the given CAL ID'*.

Hmmm, this got me to thinking (sometimes a relative rarity on my part ), so I brought up my Amazon account and checked for return info. Son-of-a-gun, there it was.

In direct contradiction to what was on the packaged MAF, I printed out a return authorization and shipping label. So off to the Embassy to get this thing in the mail. Money not in hand yet, but I'm optimistic.


Regarding the OP, I may have a line on obtaining a new complete fuel pump/sending unit, ready to go out of the box. Thanks for everybody'* help.

Right on the money. I noticed that TSB when sifting through some GM files one morning. It'* a fuel sender calibration problem that'* corrected in a PCM software update.

I asked a Chevy dealership about it some time ago, and they said it was only free under the vehicle'* warranty, which for us '96/'97 owners means nothing. They wanted $100 for an in-car reflash, but I decided to just live with it (and the other five or so patches I'm missing but can't remember a thing about).

FWIW... With some intention of design, the SSEI sending unit will have one of two types of resonators on it. One'* a straightish tube and the other is a fancy two-circle rubber/metal insert type.

I have no experience to prove that the vanilla N/A sender makes any extra noise. But I'll tell ya this.... which ever resonator you have, make sure its tight.

Somebody posted that the fancy resonator doesn't have to be tight at both ends as it stays in place because of equal flow pressure. Horsehockey. My '98 fuel pressure is best at 50+ psi (FE0102 pump) and if there is any temporary imbalance in the tank pressure, you'll lose about 8 psi if the resonator doesn't fit tight. Plus your pressure will do one of those slow bleed-outs on a normal FP test.

I really loved dropping that tank the first time on jackstands in the driveway.

So, I almost wet my pants with joy when I had to turn around and do it again to replace the resonator, the next weekend.

The fuel gauge that drops like a lead t*rd at about 1/3 tank.... I have always considered it a charming "feature" of the SSE and SSEI.

I have had them do that twice, they are excellent about honoring their goof ups with orders.




Here is the sending unit you want to go with the Dorman fuel pump and strainer, you could get the AC Delco OE ones, but if you get the AC Delco OE pump and sending unit you are going to spend quite a bit more.
