96 SSEi shutting off... Different, please read.
This is long and involved and I need help. My 96 SSEi blew the supercharger belt recently, The first shop replaced the belt no problem. That shop said the spinning broken belt took out the power steering pump seal but I couldnt afford to replace that. Upon going to work next morning, I got a half block away and it shut off. It'd crank all day long, just not start. Yes this has been posted many time not by me but please read on...
It restarted long enough to get back home. The second shop replaced the crank sensor, ignition wire and fuel pump. Over the course of about 3 weeks its been "fixed" by them 3 times. Each time I drive it about a day before it dies again. I wont go into detail about the shop, as it belongs to my girlfriends uncle. But theyd had it in their possession days on end before taking even a look at it so I have no idea they know what theyre doing. I've read some other posts and yes it has shut off in hard cornering and likes to shut off when its been driven a good 30 miles or so. Starts up fine in the morning too, Oh, the second shop didnt say I absolutely needed the power steering pump replaced so perhaps thats part of the issue?
Having been outta work the last 18 months, I dont have the funds to keep having it towed from everywhere, nor can I keep taking it to shop after shop. 2 shops is plenty. LOL I need to isolate this issue myself (through here that is)
Any ideas? I think I covered everything. Thanx for taking the time to read and re-read since I know its been mentioned many times.
Oh, the car has 55,000 original miles. Ive had it 5 years and aside new tires and new belts, Ive not had any other issues with it. It IS past due for an oil change and perhaps time for new spark plugs?

does it start right back up or do you have to wait for it to cool, because the other thing thats sort of heat related is the ign control module, you could heat it up with a heat gun and see if it cuts out.

You said they replaced tha crank sensor, but im assuming that its different from tha crank shaft sensor... i had a similar problem with my 01 monte carlo. it would start up fine, you drive it for a while then it would just cut off while driving or idling at a light.

When it don't start you need to check for spark. Something tells me you have no spark. Not sure why a fuel pump was changed. If you look around what can get hit by a belt coming apart you will see your coils. I would be taking a close look at the ICM. There is a ground wire under the ICM bracket, it'* possible that was hit by the belt.

It'* good that you had it replaced, because those things are impossible to test and quite the bugbear for several handfuls of members.
Oh, and Ducendo, welcome to GM Forum!

I thank everyone for their input. I know this topic has been discussed much but seemed I found too many situations different than mine so posted my own experience.

Thanx to all who've given input. But we're back to square one. The replacement PCM did nothing. Started fine, since its warm out I let it idle. After about 10 minutes it shut off again. So next hurdle. I swear this has to be something otherwise simple that no one can catch.

Start the car when cold (like in the morning) heat up your ignition control module and see if the car shuts off.The Ignition control module is what the coils sit on you do not have to dissassemble anything just get a heat gun or hair dryer that gets real hot and point it at the ICM to see what happens..Its a free test and sound very likely
Here is a picture of the coil packs and Icm on my 97 SSEI
they are red wth blue wires coming off them spark plug wires of course.Notice under them that jumble of wiring check those wires for damage while you are there

I'm completely with Dan here. Take the perfectly running car and throw a belt. So what in that area could have been hurt? The wiring harness to the igntion control/crank sensor.
As for the shop not saying anything about the pump. Many shops realize money is tight and won't go looking to other things. The pump is likely a big wet mess, but if your car doesn't run, they aren't going to concentrate on worrying about that.
