96 Bonneville upper intake hose - bye bye engine
 

Hey all, first time posting to this forum... I was driving a 96 Bonneville SE up until a weel ago... it had 160,000 miles on it. Apparently what happened was the upper intake hose was made of plastic, it deteriorated over time (as plastic will.. damned GM P.O.S. parts) and started leaking coolant into my engine, which got into the oil, and burned the engine up.
Anyone ever hear of this happening? Is it a common problem, and if so, is there anything I can do about it (short of replacing the whole damned motor)?

Help me understand this problem. Is the "upper intake hose" the same device as the "bypass hose" running from the block to the intake manifold on my '92? If so, on mine a leak started when the plastic male piece that is screwed into the manifold cracked. The replacement piece was made of steel though. Sure, I lost a quart of coolant or so before I found the source but............ how can that type of leak cause water to enter the engine? Looks to me like it would just blow coolant externally.

Any chance of this happening to a Series I N/A (94)? I never really used that much coolant but I've noticed the level in the resevoir drop below the full line (not a huge amount though). At idle there is what I think is a knocking noise. Not a hard knock, but maybe a soft, steady, (not too loud) "knock" or something like it. I know it's hard to explain.

How would I find out if there was this type of prob? A 'knocking' could be caused by many things (right?)

Ya..don't say knock..lol, our old Crown Vic...now it knocks, cuz its only firing on 7 of 8 cylinders. Busted piston... :roll:
