'96 Bonneville A/C Problems

Hey all. Just a quick question here. I have a 1996 Bonneville SE with the 3800 series II and auto climate control. My air conditioning does not work and I was told the A/C Clutch is shot. At the moment there is a 'metal scraping' noise coming from down at the A/C compressor. I was told it is the clutch.
Can this be replaced easily? Can anyone give me detailed instructions on replacing it?

Thanks for your time

I'm in Bowmanville. It's around an hour away from Toronto.

My brother had a similar issue with the clutch on his 96 se. He was told he can replace the clutch, but the mechanic said usually after the clutch is replaced, the compressor seems to go bad, and you're back in having the whole unit replaced. He also said the evaporator should be replaced at that time as well. He quoted a price around 700 dollars though.

It's entirely up to you if you want to get a clutch and replace it, but don't beat yourself to death when the compressor dies in time... Because this happens, and won't be your fault..

Good luck on your a/c. I live near the peace bridge...in the U.S., and I know first hand how hot it's been around the border, so, I hope you get that a/c fixed soon enough to enjoy it. I know my clutch sounds rattly when the a/c is off, and that's a sign that it will go bad in time....... I need my a/c so much right now...

I just visited a local mechanic and family friend who suggested 'shimming' the clutch or whatever (sorry my A/C knowleadge is limited) to make it stop making the noise.
Has anyone had expierance with this? Does it work?
