Hello forum, I have a 1996 ssei. 238k miles & it is driving me insane. 8mpg with a total tune up. There are codes for sure for the engine & tranny, but after about $500 in recent parts & supercharger rebuild, then the supercharger bearing going bad after 6 months, I have decided an engine swap may be best. I am wondering if the series 2, which I already have, but out of a 2003 SC regal would work. I have a sweet offer to buy the engine & tranny off 1 for $450 & it has way less miles than mine - 108k compared to 238k. Is it a pretty straight forward swap, or do I need to watch out for something during the process? I would also appreciate any general engine swap info you want to share. I did a swap on an old taurus SHO that had to be done from underneath where a gantry crane pulled the car off the drive train and was curious also if that technique is best here also.

The engine and trans your looking at will have a different transmission, so you will have problems with the PCM, and swapping the PCM I don't believe will help because wires are missing. The new transmission is a electronically controlled, the one in your car is a 4t60 and is vacuum controlled. As for the engine I think there are some differences in mounts, but I'm not sure. But you can take any parts off your old engine and swap them over. When you pull the engine, just look it over and inspect any differences, mounts, sensors, etc. And transfer it over. But the transmission will be a problem.

As far as pulling the motor, I just did an engine/trans swap on my 00 Grand Prix GT. All I did was disconnect everything from the motor/trans, remove the 4 nuts that hold the engine mount and trans mount in place and pulled them out as a unit.

Oh, I also had the rad. fans and radiator out of the way as I replacing the rad anyway. Did all this with using the stock engine hooks that should still be on your motor from the factory. One in front on drivers side, and one on the back pass. side. Used a normal cherry picker without a load leveler. Had my Dad on hand to help keep an eye on clearance of brake booster and ABS and out it came.

I had the motor/trans hanging from the picker high enough to clear the headerpanel and just rolled the car out backwards from under it to get it out. I also had the hood completely off and sitting on the roof, with a nice thick blanket under it of course.

BTW that is a nice price for that motor/trans combo. Even though you can't use the transmission, I'd be willing to bet you could turn around and sell it for about $300 or so. I paid $350 for my motor out of an 01 Monte with 105K on it, and the guy only wanted another $350 for the trans. You could swap in a new(er) motor, and maybe break even on the cost by selling the trans. Just a thought.
