Default '98..tranny lines rotted, need info

I have been losing tranny fluid fin teh driveway or a while, I found today that the cooling lines are rotted where the clamp holds them to the engine or cradle. I bought new ones and they arrive tomorrow, how much tranny fluid will I lose when I pull them off? I figure that I'll lose everything in the radiator and possibly everything in the pan.

My fluid looks brown but doesn't smell burnt, I have my fingers crossed that it isn't toast yet. The tranny lost 2 quarts twice since my wife drives the wheels off of it and tells me later.. oh by the way, my car feels funny! I have 130K on this car and the motor only has 80K. With two sons in college I need to get one more year out of this old thing before I retire it.

Any advice would be appreciated!

If your fluid is dark I would suggest changing the filter at the same time. You will need 6 or 7 quarts to do all that. Buy fluid be the gal. Make sure you get the correct stuff.

I plan to just cut off the lines and let them drain in a pan, maybe I should pull teh pan too and change teh filter. Does teh pan have a paper gasket or a reusable one?

Dextron III right?

All the pans I have dropped had reusable gaskets. My suggestion is buy a gasket from autozone or other parts store. If you don't need it, you can return it.

When you buy a filter kit, it will come with a gasket. It'* a poor gasket and if your original looks good you keep the original.

Removing the lines will not drain all the fluid. At most ....a quart

Mine were leaking a lot too. I tightned the clamps. What king of price and where did you get the lines? ( I work at CARQUEST) I put in new radiator, upper intake, battery. It has 185k. Stepson going to college next fall so I know what you mean. Would love to know. Thanks!

I found them at Advanced Auto and online, both lines were around $15 each. I changed the filter too, be aware that it takes about 8 quarts to fill it back up again. Reuse the existing gasket as previously stated, it'* reusable and a better gasket.
