Hey my A/C on my 96 SSE is acting really funny. It blows air but it blows out hot air when the temp is turned to cool. I got a diagnostic and they told me i needed a new control unit so I bought one ( for $400) and it still does the same thing. I ve tried everything a new unit its full of freon does anyone know whats going on?

Air mix control door or whatever actuates it...

I dont think your going to be real happy about this but, the air blend door actuator is probably frozen in the heat position. Take out your glove box insert, behind that you will see a silver rod hooked to a black piece of plastic at one end, the other end will be hooked to a clip. Take the silver rod out of it'* clip ( Blend air door ) and turn the clip towards the driver side, it should get cold. This actuator is roughly $65.00 at your dealer. I paid $5.00 at the junk yard.

My actuator is frozen form time to time then magically fixes its self but always defaults itself to hott and stays there no matter what temperature i put. it is such a pain in the ***.....

I tried to get to it through the glove box insert but it seems to be covered by something else i cant off. Do i need to dismantle the whole dashboard to get to it also is there any step by step guides online i could use to help.

I actually had taken 2 off of different year Bonnevilles. The newer car had a metal cover of some sort over all the componants. I did have to take the dash pad off. I dont know of a step by step process. Just get your sockets and start taking out the bolts.

You almost need to know what you;re looking for in order to see it. the following pics might be helpfull:



With the glove box insert removed, the air mix door arm and actuator connection can be seen through the left hole in the black painted steel section.



here'* what you're looking for. You can see the actuator rod (threaded section) air mix door arm (yellowish thingamabob) and the connector (vertical white hickydo)

If the actuator is faulty, the rod and arm can be moved manually with a long screwdriver or similar tool but be carefull... if it is not the problem then you can actually damage it by manually moving.

Does your temp display still blink???

I got it! Its finally blowing cold air again. I cant believe they were quoting me over $500 to fix this. Thanks to everyone for thier help those pics really helped
