94 SE - Getting high beam switch to work...
Hello all,
Just moved to Texas and need to get my vehicle inspected soon. My high beams are functional, however, the switch to turn them on is not. Actually, that's not really true either, if I get under the dash and push the switch manually it will turn on the high beams. So the problem is that metal bar which actually pushes the white switch by the pedals doesn't stay in place. The cause being the cruise control lever is missing the plastic housing which connects in to the steering column, and therefore there is nothing keeping tension on it to engage the lever. So what do I need to replace to get this working? I'm hoping it's something simple. If not, can anyone verify if it's legal to mount a button somewhere else on the dash which would engage the high beams? Or is that switch performing multiple functions, ie, opening the circuit to the low beams? Thanks! |
PS... why put a 3 foot metal bar to push a switch instead of just putting it on the lever?

Just talked to a guy who does inspections .. I don't need to worry about fixing the dimmer rod if I can mount a switch which will turn on the high beams and turn on the indicator. I'd like to make sure it turns off the low beams as well for my battery / alternator's sake. Anyone know how to do this?

For a temporary solution, for inspections sake would be to find a wiring diagram of the column and run each feature to a separate switch. Or you could go to a junk yard, and try to find a car with all that intact and get it. Also, if the lows don't go off when the highs are on isn't going to kill your alternator/battery. I just recently done a mod to do the opposite on my car, so my lows are on with my highs. But as long as you have a switch that replicates the original function, they should perform as it normally should.

Right, but is the high beam indicator turned on whenever the brights are active, or is the indicator turned on by the dimmer switch also?
|
It should come on when the brights come on.
|
That should be easy then. I'll post a picture later of the current problem and hopefully someone can help identify which parts would be needed to replace it. Thanks for the help.

Glad to help. Or try to anyways. :thumbup2

Should have a photo up by the end of the night.. Before I start does anyone know the high beam color for the 94?
|
Actually, which two wires would I connect? I think hi beam is light green. Other side of switch? Power?
