fuel pump and/or gauge?
I have a 1997 SE bonneville and sometimes my fuel gauge works and sometimes it doesn't. When you start it up it works but as soon as you hit a corner it jumps to full. My pump is a little loud and my mechanic told me the pump is going out but he was wrong last time. He tried to tell me I blew a head gasket when it was only a hole in my intake manifold. Do I need a new pump or could it be the fuel sensor?

i have the same model. my guage does the same thing, my mechanic changed the thing in the tank that tells you how much is in there and it stopped jumpin and stuff. i also had my fuel pump changed because i had gas leaking on my engine and overheating it 
it was cracked, i probably should be dead lol. but i never had a loud fuel pump problem if he says to change it might as well change it and have them fix the guage too. mine cost 500 bucks just a heads up

have the same problem with my 00 sle , its more than likely your fuel level sensor. not sure how much different your car is from mine but to fix that problem it will cost $300-$500 for the pump

Your mechanic merely doesn't know the Buick 3.8L motors as well as he could. Head gasket is a common misdiagnosis of the UIM failure.
On your fuel gauge and pump issue. GM pumps are known to run loud. When they get overly loud to the point where you can hear them w/o being right near the tank listening it usually is a sign they are getting ready to die out. As well your fuel level sender is acting up with the false gauge readings.
My recommendation would be to change both the sender and pump at the same time. this will keep you from going back into the fuel tank a second time. As for the cost on the parts... do the homework by checking the local parts places and Rockauto for prices. Many discount codes can be found and used at Rockauto if you are purchasing the parts.
My personal 97 SSEi runs a pump that I got from an Ebay vendor. TRE Performance. I've been very pleased with the pump and installed one in my pickup as that one was having issues as well. A high flow cost $80 and regular pump was about $40. Great prices and both pumps have been trouble free for almost two years.
