So my 97 Bonnie decided two days ago to start running like crap. I changed the plugs and wires hoping I fouled a plug or wire but that didnt seem to help. I left a red light earlier today and it misfired pretty bad, sounded like a backfire from the motor. The check engine light is still flashing and its power comes in surges. I tried to run the codes from the diagnostic point but cant get a reading for some reason. Does anyone know if there is a fuse associated with that? I have had this car for 6 years and the most work I have had to do was put an intake manifold in it....I guess maybe it has finally caught up with me

You will need to get the car scanned so we have a code, that will help find the problem. The first place I would start is with testing the coils.

Yes,the DLC does have fuse. Look for DLC or pcm/ecm type fuses.

Flashing engine light is usually signs of a misfire. The FSM states a flashing light is a possible catalyst damaging condition.

I was thinking that I may have a go at the coils...
Apparently when the diagnostic went it took the stereo with it which is why I was thinking it must have a fuse somewhere. Not sure if there connected somewhere or blew two fuses but Ill check if I get a chance.

Do you have an aftermarket stereo? Check the wiring behind the stereo for poorly made connections.

I need to check that to cause all the fuses appear to be good. I definatly have a bad coil, the "3/6" coil is not firing so I'm going to get one today and hopefully things will be back to semi-normal. Then its on the the stereo to find out what its problem is. If i remember correctly there should be a fuse behind the stereo somewhere, so maybe thats the problem.

Stock radio has a fuse in the fuse box. And IIRC it also powers the DLC

One problem figured out...It was the coil pack and its running like a champ again. The stereo half works, kinda like a voltage surge but I still need to check the fuse in the stereo although I highly doubt thats what it is. Probably time for a new one.
