Default Dash question

Hello i'm a Newbie with a question. 2 actually
I just found this site, and i also just bought a 92 SSEI with 127.000 on it, and the car runs nice. It had been sitting for a couple years with brake and power steering problems, i have repaired those, but here is a funny thing i was running it yesturday and the dash went out, only the tach works. I called the old owner and he told me that happened to him a long time ago,{just forgot to tell me} But anyway i have found a gentleman who has a dash cluster from a 96 ssei anyone know are these 2 compatable? if not what was the compatablility cut off? 92-94? something like that.

And also can you run 89 octane in this car. we sell gas were i work but its 89-91 octane depending on the time of year.

Thanks for any help.

89 octane is too low. I would only use it in emergencies.

As for the instrument panel, the 92-93 are the same. After 1994, some subtle changes were made, such as the compass became an automatic calibrating compass, and some of the idiot lights changed. It may work, but I wouldn't gurantee that everything would be 100% compatible.

Are you sure it'* the instrument panel, and not a fuse or wiring problem?

Or even just a loose connector on the back. I've seen that countless times. Take it apart, check all the connections between 'layers' (you'll see what I mean when you get it out), clean the connectors, and reinstall it before spending any cash.

With nearly everything being out, it has to be a connector or power source.

Don't try and swap in a '96 cluster. It sounds like you've got one or more loose connectors in the existing cluster, but not necessarily any problems worse than that. If the dash was dismantled at some point in the past by someone who didn't know what they were doing, a plug somewhere could have been left apart by mistake.

If you have the disassembly instructions for the dash cluster (and if not, they're available on this site), go ahead and get yours out, and look for obvious problems like loose plugs. I think you'll find the problem.

No, you run premium in this car. That'* what it'* designed for.

Ok, Thanks.
This dash worked this morning for a few minutes then went out again. I didn't move the car at all. So i will get those dismantle instructions and take a look, but i talked to him again and he now says that it has been like that for a while, funny it worked when i picked the car up on the trailer. But nothing but the tach, brake light, and i believe the security light is the only things that work now. I don't dare to run it because the temp is out also, i can get a reman cluster for 200. but i'm restoring 2 old cars, so it will have to wait if that is not the problem.

And i'll burn the 93, i probably will not drive it much, but i've always wanted one.

Thanks again
Glen

Eh, just sounds like loose connections. Here are your instructions:
