'92 SE Module/Coil Pack Failure
I've replaced the coil tower and ignition control module in my '92 SE 3 times. Dealer and shops hooked it up to diagnostics several times. Comes up Module problems. Module keeps blowing and I'll end up rolling on 5 or 4 cylinders before things get fixed. She has huge trouble picking up and it gets slightly worse every week until I replace the Module/coil again. If I could find the source of this short (or whatever it is) I really think Bonnie would run fine. Your help is appreciated.

Welcome to the forum!
Tell us a little bit more about the coil failure. Do you know if it's the primaries or the secondaries that are failing? This is critical. The coil acts as an isolator for over-current problems, and you can basically cut your troubleshooting in half this way. (all transformers work this way) :D |
Usually when a Ignition Module goes it takes out the Coils too. Some people cheap out & just get the Module though. BTW: Are you running Delco-Remy (3 Seperate coils with all 6 spark plugs wires down one side) OR Magnavox (! coil with 3 spark plugs down each side)???? :?
|
If that's the case, and you still have the bad coils, your primaries are getting killed. Try to verify this if you can.....this might help some:

Thrasher says they're interchangable...as long as you get both the Delco-style coils and ignition module.
PS. I hate the Magnavox system too, I've had it go 3X or so in the life of the car. That and the alternator seem to be the weak spots of the Series I 3800... |

Rat, I assume you've got the Magnavox as well? I wonder if all '92s got them, and then they switched in '93? Maybe the ECM is different... |
Thanks: Module/Coil Pack Failure
I have to tell you I'm not sure what you mean by primary or secondary. I know my way around the engine enough to find out though, willren.
I run Magnavox. Each time I've replaced them I bought both Coils and Module. As far as I know you can't run Delco in place of Magnavox. At least not on the '92 - I tried and the plug wouldn't fit. You should know that when I have replaced the module/coil myself it was with USED packs from a yard. Regardless, I believe they should run for longer than 6 months (as long as it took last time until there were problems) and presently 3 weeks without trouble |
