My dad and I went for a nice Friday afternoon walk in a junkyard. Ah, good times. Actually, he thought it looked like a scene from a horror movie and was very uncomfortable. Anyway, we found a 98 SSE with very damaged carpeting and a flooded trunk but in otherwise good interior. It was optioned out well, and this even included the HUD.

My dad was interested in swapping the windshield primarily, and I figured I might tell him that this has the HUD-oriented coating, so we would be well off to switch dashboards. 1. So, my first question is how does one remove a windshield? We can get it for $40 if we do it ourselves.

Also, this car has AL7 seats, so my dad would like to switch over. I think we have AL6 seats (driver'* seat has side controls, and the passenger side has two handles, one for moving forward and backward and the other for reclining). I can get the center console, seat controls, seats, and all the wires for $70. Holy yes.

Since the seats have spent plenty of time sunbathing and drinking up rainwater, if I can pick this all up, I'm going to use what I learned with my 94 seat swap to remove all the seat materials, go to the SLE'* AL6 seats, and add on the pumps, balloons, and then return the original seat covers since the JY'* seat covers are pretty awful. 2. Is the seat swap as easy as I imagine? Are the seat covers made any differently so as to prevent the balloon addition?

If on both cars I take out the seats, center console, and some portion of the carpeting, all necessary trim panels included, as long as I take pictures, I imagine I'd be able to do this with murderous efficiency. 3. To go to the center console-based buttons, are all the wires for the wiring harness available already inside the SLE? I'd read here before something about this, but it wasn't too clear. I'd basically like on the 99 SLE to take out the trim, rip out the seats and center console, and then as far as only wiring goes just plug everything in. Is there some more wiring to be stung into the cabin from the fuse box or something of the like?

I think bandit has done the HUD addition mod. It looked cool, and as long as I'm careful, it seems easy enough. I'll have an SAE certified mechanic on hand for most of this. He actually has more certifications, but I can't remember them all. I think there are two wires to be added to the wiring harness for perhaps the speedometer, right? 4. Can I take out both dashes and add into the 99 SLE dash the HUD from the 98 SSE'*, or must I do a complete dashboard swap? Are there any physical differences aside from the assumed dashboard HUD hole?

5. How does a climate control swap go? Are there any links to this being done here before? I'm not sure if I've found anything about this. It should be fairly straightforward, but I'm not sure about the thermometer feature. 6. If I need to install that, can I rig that into the IAT sensor?

Aside from the visor bulbs (headliner wiring is a big no-no) and the trunk-located tire inflator, is there anything else from a 98 SSE that can benefit the 99 SLE? Also ,the 98 SSE'* body is pretty bad, so I don't want just to get the entire car and do a reverse swap.

I have personally done 2 AL7 and HUD swaps, and assisted on another

i was the first to swap over the AL6 to the AL7 in my SLE

you cannot use your AL6 covers

you will need all the wiring that runs underneath the carpet to the seats, you can cut the wires on the drivers side, and then get power from your existing drivers side seat connectior

i also did the HUD before Badnit, and the swap to make the HUD work is 8 wires. You just have to remove the dash get the hud wiring and make the correct taps

the Auto CC will take ALOT of wiring, and i woudlnt recommend it, unless you have the entire harness out of the car.....and i mean from front headlight to Taillight

Wow. Lots of information there. I believe I should still be able to swap the windshields and do a HUD swap soon, though. The seats in the JY car are really bad, so it'* too bad I can't use the SLE'* current covers. Are they smaller? If I can find some seats in better condition, I'll definitely consider the AL7 swap. How does the climate control depend on so much wiring? I guess it'* just strange, and I'm so glad I have an SSEi as well as the SLE So, can the HUD "thing" still be put into the SLE'* dash, regardless of having to pull the dash out to do this, or must it be a complete physical swap?

Pat, IIRC, you swapped in the pre-96 setup. He is swapping in the 96-99...meaning there may be a little more involved, since the HUD is electrically adjusted as opposed to cable adjustment.

Since I'll try to take out the windshield, I'll see just how much I can rip away, and then it would be a shame not to pick up the dashboard. I'll just take it all, bring it to my house, and have a closer look. Maybe I will have quite a bit of stuff for the For Sale section! All those guys that want to put aluminum/white faceplates on their dashes can probably look at all the pictures I can take and follow the tutorial. It'* a benefit for everyone!

"Boosty Wiring express"

Hud swap: the quickest easiest way would be to remove the dash as you plan from the donor car. With that, you won't need to redo any wiring, except for the climate control. To retain your manual controls, or cut the hud section off the new wiring harness and put your old wiring on the new dash and hook up the 5-8 wires. This is probably the easier method.

To remove the dash. Lower the column, hud trim piece, remove the console and shifter (seats optional). Pull glove box to gain access to the 2 bolts on the left and two nuts on the right. Remove bolts from steering column area and one nut to the left of the left most dash vent. Under the dash at each outter side is one nut to remove. Remove the 4 or so long screws at the top of the dash (under trim piece) by the windshield. Pull dash back gently unhooking a connector on each end and the air tube for the climate control, then using a 7mm unhook the main wiring connector. Your dash should be out.

The windshield should be much easier to try and remove with everything out of the way.

On the seats.. when you pull them find the wiring that is from the passenger seat, follow it over to the driverside. There are a couple other wires that continue past the passenger seat, cut them. (they are part of a taped grouping and not for the seats.) Now find the orange and black thick wires on the driverside and leaving yourself some slack, cut them as close to the drivers door as possible. You should now have the wiring and air tube for the seats.

My understanding of the climate control is a new heaterbox inside, new wiring inside and out. It should be possible, but a major undertaking.
