4t60e and 4t65e differences?

What are the main differences between the two transmissions (non HD)? Are the eletrical different? Are the two of them interchangable?

BillBoost37 07-09-2005 08:26 PM

I have heard that they are not interchangeable. The 65 was used for series 2 motors if I remember correctly.

opensourceguy 07-09-2005 08:31 PM

the '65 is 97+ for both N/A and S/C. 96 for the S/C. They are not electrically compatable. You would need to get the PCM from the donar car if you were to use a 60 in a 65'd car, or a 65 in a 60'd car. They would physically bolt up though.. since the subframe is the same for all SI and SII cars, but not the SIII.

Why are you asking, anyways? Transmission swap? You pretty much HAVE to get the tranny from your year and trim level [well, N/A if you are N/A and S/C if you are S/C.. SE or SSE doesn't matter really]

Well, I am doing a full engine/tranny swap. I have a 95 bonne n/a. I dont want to change the eletrical really, just want to use what I have already.

BillBoost37 07-10-2005 01:25 AM

Please elaborate. What year and trim level is your car and which drivetrain are you aiming to put into the car.

I have a 95 bonne n/a.

opensourceguy 07-10-2005 10:17 AM

But what do you want to do with your '95?

Incorrect. The 1996 SSEi came with a 4T60(HD).

Steve I believe all SSEi's came with HD. The neat thing is 65's didn't automatically come with a tranny cooler. So chance of failure is probably equal or greater.

ssesc93 07-10-2005 11:08 AM

not the earlier model bonnies. (UNLESS IT HAD TO SHOW HD UNDER THE TRANSMISSION PAN)

banned3800 07-10-2005 02:29 PM

1) In the NA bonnies the 4T60-E was used through 1997...

2) 1997 was the first year for the SC'd Bonnie to use the 4T65-E

3) 1998 was the first year for the NA Bonnie to have the Light Duty 4T65-E

4) I have yet to see any 4T60-E that had HD stamped on the pan, although all of the SC'd bonnies used the HD version...

5) Its said that the 4T65-E was a 90-95% redesign of the 4T60-E

I have a 95 Bonneville SE w/ 3800 Series II. I want to do a direct swap with another series II and 4t60e trans. I know now that the electrical is quite different. Would I be able to get any 4t60e transmission (like this http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...984266331&rd=1) And do a direct swap without changing any of my current wires/setup?

LakevilleSSEi 07-10-2005 04:43 PM

That trans will not work correctly.

The easiest thing that you could do is to take and try to find a complete engine, trans, PCM and wire harness out of the same vehicle and modify as needed.

Agreed that trans will not work correctly... All of the tranny wiring and the connector would have to be changed, and even then it will have the wrong gear ratio...

I have question why would you want swap a series I for Series II. I mean I like my series one but I will admit that series 2 has more power and better fuel mileage. It pretty much almost as reliabe as my series 1. That would be alot of work to do that. I a, thinking junk yard and hope for the best

LakevilleSSEi 07-11-2005 12:01 AM

I think the purpose of the swap is to have the more powerfull motor in the lighter car.

dumbsioux 07-11-2005 03:34 PM

Who said anything about putting a series one in it? I need a 4t60e tranny becuase thats the one my car has. Why would that trans not work with mine, if both are 4t60 electronically controlled?

There were several revisions done to the 4t60-e when it was in production. That includes electrically and some random hard parts. So, there are differences.
That tranny is from a 3.1l engine and i'm next to positive that it has a 3.33 FDR instead of your 3.06, along with a different stall torque converter. Also it has an OBDII system controlling it instead of your hybrid OBDI/II system. That will defintiely give you trouble. The actual transmission case might actually be different too, since it's from a w-body.
