4T60-E transmission questions.

my transmission is doing some really weird things and i was wondering if it's the precurser to it giving out of if there is an easy fix.

heres what it's doing. the transmission seems to run fine. when i run it on the track i get alot of wheelspin (i almost have to throttle back to get it moving) it then holds first way too long 6500+. deep into fuel shutoof, the car seems to nose over and die at this point, before shifting into second and continuing on strong for the remander of the race.

during street driving the transmission is wonderful. except when i'm on the throttle with the wheel turned sharp. IE. a u-turn. the trans over-revs as though it's slipped into neutral. if i continue to stand on the throttle it will engage hard and chirp the tires. usually a quick blip of the throttle will cause it to re-engage and i'm on my way.

the same thing seems to occur during panic braking. the vehicle will stop fine but when i step on the gas i find that i have no power. the transmission will remain in "neutral" until such time as i apply power. then it will engage hard. i've gotten quite used to it and will usually blip the throtte until i feel it engage and i'm off on my merry way.

is this common for 140K 4T60-E's, is it dying, does it just need a flush? shift kit? need to be turned into a boat anchor? it currently has an adjustable modulator, but when installing it i found that it already had an adjustable. do you think this could be the problem? do i ask too many questions?

thanks.

Re: 4T60-E transmission questions.

<scratching head>....hmmm... First guess would be electrical or a sticking accumulator. Something associated with the forward band, since that's the only one that releases to produce neutral. Solenoid "A" is the 1-2 shift (it is de-energized to apply the 2nd gear clutch.)

Just for grins, try taking the PCM out of the equation by selecting D1 and doing a couple of U-Turns to see if it is still slipping. Same on the drag strip, manually do the 1-2 shift on the column and see if the transmission shifts when you tell it to.

Is the transmission fluid low at all?

willwren 03-25-2007 11:06 AM

Marik, what PCM/eprom are you running right now? Even slip won't cause it to hold that long. You have a funny issue here, and my bet will be electrical.

my 95's 4t60e-hd was slipping around corners right before its death

First question that comes to mind is: what is the condition of the fluid? Also, do you have access to a scantool that allows realtime viewing of the solenoids?

This problem sounds fluid-related to me. With this problem only happening on a sharp turn, it sounds like your fluid is either not being picked up until it "levels out" (i.e. low fluid condition) or even the fluid itself has lost alot of its properties. OR a partially clogged filter. In any event, I would drop the pan and see what lies beneath.

IIRC he dosent have OD, at least when it was the FL meet

the level running is great, maybe even a little high. no doubt it needs to be changed and the filter with it. it's about the colour of slightly used oil.

i guess i'm gonna have to track down a place to do some tranny work too.

now the proceedure is drop, drain, filter, run for a month, drop, drain, filter again? do not flush ever?

as for the PCM. um... i don't know which i have. how do i find out?

willwren 03-25-2007 07:55 PM

I've never had bad luck with a flush. But a flush doesn't get a filter. Try a pan drop and filter. Drive for a week or so, then do a flush if you think it still isn't pink enough.

Flushes ruining transmissions is a myth.

score, did a pan drop and filter today. went smoothly and runs great. the over-reving is eliminated and the 1-2 shift is friggin sweet. yum.
