I have been having intermitent problems with the display on my factory radio. (this is a junkyard radio with CD to replace the original cassette version)..so I got a second radio w/cd from another junkyard, and I have the same poblem no display...Now I'm talking about the 2nd junkyard radio...If I shine a flashlight on it I can see it'* working..just no backlight. took the old one apart (the 21st junkyard radio) and tested the bulb it tests good. All the other lights on the radio, buttons etc work and seem to dim etc.just no display...I have not re-installed the 1st replacement radio that I the bulb tested good on. I suppose I should but. What I am wondering is there a seperate circuit for the radio display light that I might have a bad circuit...ground, relay etc. Maybe I should try some resoldering on the boards? any ideas welcome

If you have had this problem on more then one radio, then it'* very unlikely the problem is with the radio. I would start with checking fuses. Then look at the ground buses that are along the doors.

yeah check the fuse(*) ground and also check to see that you have no wire pulled loose out of the connector or any stripped wires touching each other

so I reinstalled the 1st replacement radio..and used a flashlight on the display..nothing in the display..blank. Took the 2nd radio apart (this is the one that the display is working) Checked the bulb for continuity and it'* open.. Looks like replacing the bulb in the 2nd radio is the way to go.

Looks like the bulb is mounted into a little plastic holder that has a couple of brass tabs that are soldered to the board. Not seeing a way to get just the glass bulb out of the holder...looks like I will have to unsolder the holder? Once I have the holder out can a reload it with a new glass bulb or do I need to get a bulb/holder asby? Where can I get such a bulb at a rasonable price? Is there an acceptable replacement? like just soldering in a general use LED of some type..anybody have an idea of a value on the bulb what wattage, or lumens/brightness etc.

I picked up a bulb at Radio Shack and soldered it in..works fine. The bulb I used was a 12 volt, 60ma
came in a package of 2 for $1.79. It is considerably smaller in size than the original but seemed to be about the same brightness. I un-soldered the old bulb & holder asby off of the board and mounted the new bulb into the throatof the holder and solder it back in place. The package said the bulb is rates at 10,000 hours should be good for a long time.
