1997 Bonneville Stalling Problem
I have a 1997 Pontiac Bonneville SSEi and it keeps stalling on me! usually when its slowing down and its getting more frequent.
i think its the TPS and i was wondering if anyone knew the Voltage setting for a 1997 Bonnie thanks! |
Let's back up a minute. When was the last time the Throttle body was cleaned? Procedure is in Techinfo. Link at the top of the page.
Are the LIM gaskets original? Are you losing any coolant? When was your last FULL tuneup? How old are the O2, plugs, wires, and filters? |
Also the mileage on the car and how long you have had it.
Do you have a Check Engine light? If you do, do you have the code? If not, most parts store ie. Avdance, O' Rileys, Napa, ect...can usually pull the code for free :D |
sorry, i just had a tune up but they (car place) don't know why it keeps stalling
its got about 89000 miles but i mis-worded my question, what percentage does the throttle read at idle? mine is 0%, should it be more? |
Your throttle should be at 0%.
No air passes it. The idle air is controlled by the IAC, which bypasses the throttle plate, and is why I pointed you to the TB/MAF sensor cleaning article in Techinfo in the first place. |
i really appreciate your help, thank you so much, most cars read like 8% at idle so i was skeptical
i found another problem though, gasoline is leaking into the air vacuum and back into the engine... the diaphragm regulator has a leak so im getting another part this car is frustrating. lol |
That would possibly be a fuel pressure regulator failure. Which means you're running pig rich at idle, and the car will stumble.
This is also VERY dangerous, as fuel pools in the lower intake manifold after shutdown. It can explode when you start the car. Get this fixed right away. Pull the vac line off the FPR on the fuel rail after driving, and smell it. If it smells like fuel replace the FPR ASAP. Do not drive the car until you do. |
Just to drive Bill's point home. This is what happened to one of our member's car due to a leaky FPR. The warning about not driving it is not overstated!

i just pulled the vacuum line off and more gas came pouring out...
i think you saved my life! i have to swing by GM and pick up the part tomorrow thank you! i hope that was the last problem for now |
Similar Problem?
Just today I had a problem that I hope is not related. Drove the car to school fine earlier today. Washed the car and let it sit a couple hours. Got in and went to grab a bite to eat and the car wouldn't start up. It turns over fine, and I can give it some gas and get the RPMs up for a few seconds but then it dies right away. I've never had starting problems. I added some older gas with stabil in it then more premium on top of that because I was pretty low on gas, but now theres plenty. Smelling the tailpipes it smells like its burning rich (never did before). I'm going to let it sit overnight and give it another whirl tomorrow morning. Does anyone have a picture of the vac line to the FPR so I can check mine? Car is a '99 bonne with 95,000 miles.
